holy house of mirrors!

while valerie was here, i really wanted to check out the house of mirrors.  lindsay suggested that it was something that val would really like so on saturday morning, valerie, shelly and i set off on an adventure.  lindsay had told me that we would know it as soon as we saw it.  she was not wrong....

this is what the outside of the house looks like.  hard to miss, right??  anyway, we wandered in and met our fabulous host for the day, lidia.  she is an elderly italian woman who moved to kuwait in the 60's, was married to a famous kuwaiti artist, and made every mirror mural in this house with her own two hands.  and there are mirrors EVERYWHERE!  here's a taste of the mirrors as you enter the house and then inside the house (more pictures on facebook)...

so it was very interesting, listening to lidia explain how she did all of this and also to her stories about being in kuwait through the revolution and all of that.  she has a lot of her husbands art work on display which is...interesting.  not my taste necessarily but he was a talented man, no doubt.  finally, we were introduced to "art therapy" and got to play a fun "art galaxy game"!  art therapy rooms are rooms filled with either her paintings or mirrors but then she turns off the lights and has coloured lights, glow in the dark stars, and music playing in the backround.  it was something else for sure!!

the galaxy game, because i know you are wondering, is a game where you throw small painted triangular canvases at a giant painting of a galaxy on a carpet.  then as the pieces stick (with velcro of course), you make your own art.  then you're supposed to take a picture so that it looks like you are coming out of your galaxy.  (i couldn't make this stuff up, really!)

it was kooky and wonderful and exciting and interesting and all things in between.  i am so glad that we went and had this experience.  and here is shelly getting her little gift from little lidia on our way out.  a wonderful kuwait experience.  a must see!!!
