I find japanese subcultures and their street fashion styles sooooo interesting. Can't say it enough! I would love to go to Japan, although it'd be a true shopping heaven for someone like me, and for a shopaholic could be a dangerous thing too. I'd have to come back home with an extra suitcase and empty pockets. Aaah, but it'd be worth it.
I love these styles so much that I even threw a Harajuku Girls Tea Party for my birthday a couple of years ago. :)
I'm going to go through a few of these styles, some of my favorites and not-so-favorite. We'll start with a classic:
LOLITA
This style to me is the most well known. You've got the classic lolita style, although my fav is the elegant gothic lolita, which is influenced by the victorian era.
Sweet Lolita:
And the Fairy Lolita is quite cute too:
A lot of these styles start to blend in all together that I myself get quite confused...?? haha, oh well...
DOLLY KEI
This look is influenced by the Middle Ages and European fairy tales.
DECORA
This style would probably work the best for me. It's basically where you try to pile on as many accessories that you own on yourself, hahaa.
GANGURO / YAMANBA
This look became popular in the early 2000s. I'm blaming the Spice Girls for this. This style, amongst a few others, is my least favorite out of the subculture styles. I don't even like this look 1%, haha.
FAIRY KEI / SPANK!
This look consists of all things 80s and cute. :)
FRUITS (???)
I'm not too sure what this style is called..?? It looks like a even more morphed version on the decora trend. I call it, 'Raver Kids on Acid.' Another one on the bottom of the favorite list.
MORI GIRL
And then we have Mori Girl, which I discovered and fell in love with last winter although this style has been around since 2007. Mori means "forest" in japanese and the concept is "a girl who looks like she is living in the forest." Natural and earthy. Not mangled, dirty and unshaven, hahaha. A lot of loose fitting pieces, layered, softly colored clothing, knits and vintage.
I just think this look is sooooooo darling. I was pleased last winter when I did a quick photoshoot titled The Madame Butterfly Project to showcase the hair accessory I crafted and then realized that my look (along with surroundings) kind of had that Mori style to it :)
Of-course when I fell in love with this style and in my obsessive / OCD nature I promptly went out and purchased a shit load of granny scarves. Baaaaah.
