friday is my favorite day on the radio because friday is story corps day.
it's a short {two minutes?} conversation between two very normal, everyday people about their lives... it's just broadcast to the universe through national public radio. you know, everyday stuff.
father/daughter + adoption.
father/son + being a writer.
mother/son's killer + death.
mother/father + september 11.
student/teacher + economics.
husband/wife + baseball.
they're human-interest interesting with normal voices, genuine people, and any emotion involved in their stories are unsolicited by the radio microphone. it's just a conversation between two people bonded over something.
this morning i heard the father/daughter + adoption story. it was sweet. the dad got a little choked at the end, telling his daughter how much she changed his world.
{how 'bout that, dad?}
made me think: what would be the topic of my story corps story and who would be my partner?
my mom. and i'd talk about the time she was paralyzed in the hospital for months and months and how i couldn't sleep well at night until i said my prayers.
my dad. and the only time he sat me down, father to daughter and told me the decision i was about to make was not the right one.... how different my life's path would have been had i not listened.
bff holly. we laugh at the silly antics of our teenage years and remind the world what a blessing it is to have a constant, lifetime friend even after fighting about boys and cardigans.
bestie jen. and how naturally our friendship fell into place. how friends are supposed to be friends without screaming at each other for attention. even when you need a ride to your court-ordered community service.
co-worker greg. we'd laugh at all the people who don't think it's possible to be friends in the workplace and how normal it is for a family to tow a 29-year-old around on family vacations and sunday afternoon church meetings.
robin. what an impact the shanty had on our forever lives. how grateful i am she chose me to go to craigo's with her the last time she started her pork and bell peppers diet. or how she'd always make me call the j.crew customer service phone number for her when she had to make a return. {i have it memorized: 800.562.0258}
brooke e. what a whirlwind of a friendship we had for the 6 months we lived in the same place. how deep can two friends get in to girl talk conversation? time stood still as we talked and talked and talked... until the we were certain we got our money's worth of free refills at the diet coke fountain.
and so.many.more.
i want in on the story corps booth.
