the italian job.

i know, i've been avoiding it for weeks, but i really do need to tell you about my trip to italy.  SO, i have written up the rome highlights and an working on venice and florence.  i am also attempting to kill two birds with one stone and use this (when it's finished) as my wawa news article.  so please excuse the capitals :)

For the Christmas holiday this year, I decided to travel to Italy with my wonderful friend Valerie and her daughter, Naomi, who I have also traveled with in the past.  The first week was to be spent in Rome and Venice with Naomi and then we would meet up with Valerie in Florence for the second week.  I had been to Sicily previously, but not anywhere else in Italy.  I was really excited about the idea of being in such a beautiful country at Christmas time though I was not super excited about the cold!  As it turns out, it was all magnificent and not as cold as anticipated!  Overall, it was an amazing two weeks, and I’d like to share some of the highlights with you.

Rome
  •  We arrived in Rome late in the afternoon and by the time we got into the city it was getting dark.  We were in the taxi, wondering how long it would be until we would arrive at the hotel when we turned a corner, and there it was – the Colosseum!  It was all lit up and looking amazing!  It was one of those moments where you think you might need someone to pinch you!

  • On our first day in the city, we went back to the Colosseum to check it out first hand.  It really is an outstanding structure and it was so cool to see it in person.  We kept walking around and around and taking pictures, because it was beautiful from every angle!

  • We took a tour bus through the city, the type that you can hop on or off whenever you feel like it, and it seemed like the best plan since it rained for the first three days that we were in Rome.  On the bus we caught our first glimpse of many of the famous and exciting sights around the city, including St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City!
  • At one of our stops on the tour bus, we got off to look for the Trevi Fountain.  It was raining but we kept walking in search of this famous fountain.  We were walking through narrow cobble stone streets when all of a sudden, we turned a corner and there it was!  It is truly remarkable!  The details in the carvings are outstanding and it’s much larger than I had anticipated.  There is a belief that if you throw a coin into the fountain, it will ensure your return to Rome.

  • The Vatican City.  There is so much to be said, but it’s so hard to describe!  The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and the only one that you don’t need a passport to get into.  We visited St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and of course, the Sistine Chapel.  It was definitely a highlight for me.  To be there in person and see the work of Michelangelo, its hard to put into words really.  Did you know that Michelangelo was a sculptor and that the Sistine Chapel was his first attempt at a Fresco?  He had never done it before!  And he single-handedly created what became one of the most influential art pieces of all time.  Simply incredible!  We also mailed some post cards from the Vatican Post office which has it’s own stamps and everything!

  • Aside from the highlights or must-sees of the city, we did a lot of wandering and enjoying the sights of Christmas decorations, Nativity Scenes, and a Christmas market.  We saw beautiful churches, the Spanish Steps, Obelisk’s all the way from Egypt, and tons more.  It was a great start to our Italian adventure!

today.

today was a wonderful day.  a day filled with friends and laughter and sharing and giving.  a day that makes me thankful for the friends that become my family when i am away from home.

last night i slept over at the parkinsons because with their love-filled pleas, i didn't have much choice.  i feel so at home in their home.  this morning we had some "family" time and watch americas next top model which we all love.  then as they went off to play basketball and tutor, i headed to the huffho's to bake a birthday cake and wrap secret santa gifts with alex. we wrapped and talked and laughed and it was really great to spend some time with her.  next we were off to the pantomime at the kuwait little theatre.  the "we" in this case includes: me, shelly, lindsay, phillip, alex, ian, cathy, shahid, pat, and kelly.  it was SO funny.  we laughed o hard we cried.  highlights included the man dressed up as a woman hitting on phil throughout the entire play and when he/she put a whole bag of skittles in his mouth and then couldn't talk.  hilarious!  so much fun!!  (and if you don't know what a pantomime is, like i didn't, you should look it up and try to find one to go to- fun fun fun!)  after the panto we all went back to the parkinson's to celebrate the birthdays of ian, shahid, and lindsay (all in december) as well as christmas!  we had a secret santa which was very amusing.  i had phil and after hours of deliberating i gave him 10 cans of lays potato chips.  kinda weird, i agree but it's funny because he LOVES them and lindsay HATES when he has them.  it was perfect.  also it was wrapped in the shape of a tree.  awesome.  i got the most WONDERFUL gift, because my secret santa, cathy, got me JUST what i wanted!  it's a mug from caribou coffee with little inspirational messages all over.  it's perfect!  i also got 6 ikea glasses which are super fun and blue!

anyway, it was a terrific day, and the reason i was writing is because many times throughout the night when we were all laughing or oohing and awing over someones gift, i thought to myself that i am really lucky to have them all.  it makes being away from home that much easier when you know you have all this love and support right here with you.  they are an amazing group of people and i don't know what i would do without them!!

so to my dear kuwait family,
thank you for everything.  for the laughs and the tears.  for the support, for your trust, for your patience.
i love you guys.
merry christmas and all the best in 2012.  safe travels!  i'll miss you guys!!
xoxoxoxo

all the gifts under the tree!

loving my gift!!

phil and his love from the panto

can it be true???

last night i went to a lovely christmas dinner at shelly's house.  i'll tell you more about that later (and post some pictures) but here's the thing:  i went to a christmas dinner and didn't eat turkey!  i haven't eaten meat in more than 2 weeks because i want to try being a vegetarian for a while. i went to the party with the full intention of having some turkey, cause come on....it's turkey, but when it came time to put some on my plate, it felt hypocritical.  it just felt wrong.  so i didn't do it.  could it be true??  am i a vegetarian??  i think i am for now!

terrible, i know.

i am sorry that i have been absent so much this week.  but this time, i swear it's not my fault!  my internet ha been TERRIBLE in the evenings which of course is the only time i am home.  it seems to be working well right now so hopefully it keeps up!
so let' see, what did i do this week....
  • tutored.  sunday, monday, tuesday.  for an hour and a half each night.
  • went shopping and for dinner at city center.  groceries mostly.  along with a few kitchen items.
  • yesterday was sports day at school.  it was a hectic but great day.  the kids had SO much fun and i got to work with lindsay!  i seem to have damaged my voice a bit in the process but these things happen...
  • pinterest.  i have finally been accepted and i am OBSESSED.
  • planned for a supply teacher.  i am going to be away in bahrain on sunday and monday of this week coming.  i have to go on a visa run.  so i had to plan and make sure that EVERYTHING was ready for the person who will cover my classes.
  • in my down time i watched some shows and did a bit of work on my course (which has also been a pain since the internet was so bad.)
this weekend i have the holiday bazaar, a surprise party, and lots of marking to do!!!  then off to bahrain on sunday!  time flies when you're busy!  only  4 weeks til christmas vacation!!!! yahhhooooo!

fa la la la laaaaa!

i think it's time to start getting into the festive spirit!!!  today we are off to the first holiday bazaar of the season and i am told that it's a doozy!!!  i can't wait to see what's in store!

oh did i mention that SANTA is going to be there??? :)

the breakdown

friday night was our staff christmas party.  it was on a rooftop at a restaurant and was really fun!  there was great food, lots to drink, great people, and lots of laughs.

after the party we went to a couple different bars and went dancing.  it was a really, really fun night!

then it happened.  there was a live band that was really good and we were busting a move. then they started singing "what's going on" by four non blonds.  and i started crying. the situation was so similar to when ann would sing to me (and the drinks didn't help) and i couldn't hold it in.  i missed her.  a lot.  BAH.  i felt so silly.  i know it's allowed and i know it's good to let it out.  but at the bar?!  yeesh.

anyway, i sang the song, through my tears for you ann.  love you lots and miss you more.

it's beginning to look a lot like christmas!

december 1st is a good day!  and for anyone that knows kelly, you know that according to kelly december 1st is the day that you are officially allowed to start decorating for christmas and listening to christmas music.
SO, we spent the evening of december 1st putting up our christmas tree, putting on the lights, taking off the lights, putting on new lights, decorating the tree, decorating the apartment, drinking apple cinnamon tea, and listening to christmas music!!  it was LOVELY!  leeann came over and we had our own little christmas prep party.  and now our silver, blue and green themed tree is standing proud in vietnam, topped with a santa hat this year and my tree skirt is to die for! christmas is JUST around the the cornerhave you put up your tree yet????

a nice weekend

i had a really good weekend.  just wanted to tell you.  it went by way too fast but it was a good one!  here's why it was great:
  • friday night kelly and i had drinks and dinner with two great friends, ted and rita.  we had korean food and many korean drinks.  then another friend, hang, came out to meet us.  we drank more korean drinks and then went to the tavern for even more drinks.  a great night.  lots of talking and really getting to spend some time with hang.  super fun.
  • saturday we went with krista and cheratien to the christmas bazaar downtown.  there were tables from many different countries, selling things from their country that are famous, like the maple syrup at the canada table.  there was also food from many different countries and you could get your picture taken with santa and his elves (which were students from our school).
  • after the bazaar kelly drove me to the post office to pick up a package that i got in the mail!!  i was pleasantly surprised to get a ring and two charms from my wonderful aunties for a "thinking of you at christmas" gift!  so thoughtful of them!  thank you xoxo
  • saturday night kelly, jeremy, cindy, colleen and myself were invited to krista and cheratiens for dinner.  inspired by a "20 awesome things" email from jeremy, we decided to get together for an AWESOME dinner with AWESOME people!  we ate delicious mexican food and drank yummy fruity drinks.  the night ended with a good talk and a good friend.
  • today i spent some time with the blog (i have been neglecting it, i know) and then went to the spa with leeann.  read about that insanity here.
  • kelly took me downtown this afternoon to do some shopping.  very productive trip.  i bought lots of fun stuff for my class's pen pals in canada and some christmas gifts for my family that i will be meeting up with in singapore next weekend.
  • finally, kelly cooked a delicious pot roast for dinner and leeann came over to eat.  a lovely way to end a great weekend!
