today i became one of THOSE people that carry home "briefcases" with file folders packed inside. full of important material i need to review before tomorrow's 8 a.m.
and then there's material for tomorrow's 11 a.m. that i plan on reviewing during the 8 a.m.
11x17" documents, z-folded, binder clipped, and situated just so.
notebooks with messages from phone calls scribbled inside.
and business cards strewn throughout.
lame.
i never fail to remind my department manager/co-worker friend about how much it "sucks to be important". especially in instances when he's got to get his management hat on and have intense, closed door meetings about a staff member's sub-par performance. or when he's staying late to write a proposal that may win us a project that will feed the mouths of all of the hungry baby bird engineers....
but, guess what?
tonight i stayed late to write a proposal that may win us a project that will feed the mouths of all the hungry baby bird engineers. and in the coming weeks, for the first time, i'll be conducting performance reviews to a couple staff members on my team.
and, i mean... what am i? just a sassy, gen y, reality tv junkie who listens to miley cyrus and sports green nail polish.
but the boss man's favorite new thing is to remind me how much it "sucks to be important"
it was a really funny joke when i was not in the equation.
i asked for it, though.

i serve on committees and boards.
i attend golf tournaments with clients.
i accept the raise offered to me - conditional upon my agreeance to join "management".
i sign myself up for training opps that result in added responsibilities... and bonus paperwork.
and i love my job more than you love yours.
i am so freaking lucky.
i am so freaking lucky.
