1. Utriai Residence by Architectural Bureau G.Natkevicius & Partners
Built for a family of three, its standout feature is a cantilevered section that doubles as a carport. The design was inspired by Noah's Ark "where the family with all their belongings and animals moved from the city."

 

2. Cabaña Irma Cabezas by Diego Mendoza Valenzuela
A compact pine wood-clad house in Paine, Chile for an elderly woman who wanted to live alone. The program's focus was simplicity, to reduce to a minimum the movement required to live in the house. Of note, a cathedral ceiling and a large floor to ceiling window in the entrance way.

3. Twin Lofts by Federico Delrosso
A multi-story loft in a former industrial space in Milan combines muted colors (white, grey, natural brown and black) and simple materials (glass, wood and iron).

4. Buser / Chapoton Residence by Mayer Sattler-Smith
A house in Alaska designed for a professional musher (yes, dogsleds!). Oriented to maximize views of the landscape, to the north is Mount Mckinley, or as the locals call it denali which means the high one in Athabaskan. "Some consideration for sustainable design include a heat recovery ventilation system, triple pane glazing and a double furring wall for the exterior walls." Which also happens to help with the energy bill in Alaska.

Bartlett School of Architecture graduate Richard Hardy presented this short film for his master graduation. It is his vision of a future-city wich is artificially intelligent and self sustainable. This video together with his thesis talks about artificial intelligence as a necessity for human evolution. The graphics are amazing, reminds me a little bit of Machinarium.

I see this video is an elegy. I know the idea of sustainability and ground breaking technology are positive values in nowadays society but for me this perspective is just sad. The idea that nanotechnology will surpass the human intelligence makes our existence as a race pointless which is of course frightening.

...and maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, and after my recent post about hippie houses, I think you understand my nostalgic approach to nature.

In any case... this is a beautiful powerful video that raises questions and it is worth watching even if you're not interested in all the futuristic-sustainable mumbo-jumbo.

Hardy's words:
'The concept of a future sustainable city is developed for a society that is currently not responding effectively to environmental dangers. “Transcendence” in this case referring to a point when artificial intelligence has reached or surpassed that of the human.The Transcendent City is an autonomous artificial machine that extends across the earth adapting to the natural eco-systems it encounters while deriving its energy from the renewable resources available at each particular site.'

The Dovecote Studio by Haworth Tompkins

I really really love this...it's close to poetry in my opinion ... it has the same feel as those Neo-Gothic pavilions of the romantic English gardens.
London architects Haworth Tompkins have inserted a Corten steel artist’s studio into a ruined Victorian dovecote in Suffolk, UK.
Called The Dovecote Studio, the structure has a pitched rood and occupies the same space as the original building’s interior.


The single volume will be used by artists in residence (it can operate as a simple bedsitting room with a compact kitchen), by musicians as rehearsal or performance space (there is a large opening door to an adjoining courtyard), by staff for meetings or as a temporary exhibition space.

A skylight in the north side of the roof illuminates the plywood interior, which includes a mezzanine with a desk and corner window overlooking marshes towards the sea.
The steel was welded together to form a watertight box, constructed on-site and lifted into the brick shell by a crane.

Korean designers AnL Studio have completed an observatory made of shipping containers in Songdo New City, Incheon, South Korea.
Called OceanScope, the structure has three containers supported at angles of ten, 30 and 50 degrees so that visitors can ascend inside them and watch the sunset over the harbour.
This really is sustainable design. It recycles the least expensive unused containers and it's so beautiful!

I really like the interior design made by I29, the space is very aloof and quiet.
The furniture is informal and dynamic.

The defining element, the Grcic chair, it urges you to think about the design and the technical process. The black and white scheme can be really rigid sometimes ... but the way they're working it - open spaces, cool design - it's the perfect balance between freedom and a sense of security.

What i like the most it's that it doesn't look like a school at all but it's a challenging space, very flexible. A place that allows space for the imagination. Just like a school it's supposed to be!
