q:
what skills do you want to learn?
a:
a want to sew, crochet, and fly a plane.
no biggie, right?
{morbid detail: i became obsessed with the idea of learning to fly a plane when jfk, jr. died. obsesssssed. if he could do it - or not - so could i.}
i can sew, kind of. i took a class in college, but i'm not much of a respecter of rules and exactness, so the professional critiquing eye that assigned me a grade at the end of the semester didn't do much for my ambition to continue for hobby. but i know how to wind the spool and thread the needle and push the pedal. that's most of it, right? if i had to, i could make a halloween costume for a kiddie.
in fact, my mom's prized nearly-antique bernina is on a truck - en route to my house. it will be a welcomed addition to the creative room.
and i can knit... i can't follow a pattern, but i can knit and purl, and somehow make my knitting needles do what they need to. enough. so crocheting can't be that hard, can it?
chalk them up as goals for the year.
but i just threw master woodworker to the end of my name.... kind of.
with a few google searches in the likes of "how do i strip the paint off a door?" or "how do i stain wood?" i made a grocery list, went to lowe's for some supplies, and read the directions on the back of the bottles.
of course i learned lessons along the way - wear gloves to avoid burning a hole through your skin, crack the garage door so as to not die from toxic fumes, yada - but mostly i read the rules on the backs of the bottles and i got to work.
and it worked!
'tis the season of self-improvement...
what do you want to learn?
