who what where when why wednesday.

q:

what words are off limits in your house?

a:

"whatever."
"shut up."
"i'm sorry."

"whatever": there is nothing more condescending than "whatever" when spoken in real conversation.  it says "i am completely disregarding what you're saying right now.  it means nothing to me." and it hurts my soul.

"shut up": is rude. and adults should never talk to each other like that.

"i'm sorry": when used unnecessarily says "i have no confidence in the things i'm doing and i'm not worthy."
put a bunch of girls in the same room and they'll start apologizing for every little thing. makes me crazy.
ask lara and andi. i laid down the law this weekend, since none of us did anything offensive enough to warrant 14 apologies in a single day. we ought to love and accept our friends enough to have a few gimme's with each other.  apologies not necessary.

"stupid" wasn't allowed in our house growing up... along with "shut up".  i learned "whatever" by sad experience and "i'm sorry" came to me this weekend.

what about you?  what are your words?
