the great ice exchange

so there is this bar that we sometimes go to called 404.  it's a vietnamese place and its fairly clear that its not a place that many expats frequent.  anyway, it's a fun place to eat and drink beer while sitting in small plastic chairs and "cheers"ing with the locals.

however, my favourite part of the entire experience is the ice exchange.  i suppose i should explain that in vietnam you almost always drink your beer with ice which is strange to us but normal practice here.  so, the girl comes around and makes sure there is always ice in your beer.  and then, when your ice has melted a bit, she comes, takes the ice out of your beer (with tongs) and replaces it with a new piece of ice.  the best part is that the new ice and the old ice all go into one bucket.

this leads me to the question, if i have a medium ice cube that the girl replaces with a large ice cube, and you have a small ice cube, does she give you my medium ice cube?  i don't believe that the ice exchange is very sanitary... but there is just something about it that i love.

and they are SO quick!  one time the girl replaced my ice while i was lifting my glass up to take a drink!  come on!  what's not to love about that??

the great ice exchange.  it's genius.
