on the way home from school today, kelly and i were RIGHT behind an accident when it happened. it was not the worst accident i have seen since being here but i was so scared because we were so close and there were children involved. let me explain.
there was a man in front of us that had two small children on his bike with him. two girls. one maybe grade 2 sitting in front of him and one even younger sitting behind him. another man on a bike by himself came up quite quickly and was swerving around traffic and bumped into the man with the children. the man and two girls tipped over to the right and the man by himself veered to the left and hit the median and was thrown off his bike over the median. they are all lucky because it could have been much worse. no one seemed to be badly injured but the little girls were crying and the man was SO angry at the other man. he was pointing and staring and i was sure it was going ot turn into a bad scene.
i encouraged kelly to drive away at that time because unlike canada, where you can get in trouble for leaving a crime scene, in vietnam, for us, leaving the crime seen is much more favourable. i'm sure there were unkind words and tones and maybe even some physical contact after we left (i once saw men in a straight up fist fight over an accident).
anyway, the reason i am writing about this....the part that makes me ill....is that NEITHER of the children were wearing helmets!!!! the men both were but WHY ON EARTH did the man decide that it was a good idea to get on a bike with two small children with NO HELMETS???!?!!!!! it makes me insane. so often here i see people with children wrapped in bug nets or wearing face diapers...but no helmet. so god forbid they might get a bug in the face or breath in a little exhaust but don't even think twice about a device that could SAVE THEIR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
